How to conduct your own roof check

A roof is the most important asset your house can have. Not only does it protect you from the heat and rain here in Singapore, they also act as a shield for the house itself by making sure that moisture and mould do not get into the structural support and damage it.

In addition, having a solid roof will save on energy due to lesser air leaks from the inside. And of course, when a roof is both strong and stable enhances the house’s curb appeal.

This means that you should always regularly schedule a check for your roof to make sure that it is resistant to the harsh weather elements and to spot for any potential issues. Ideally a professional waterproofing contractor should look at your roof twice annually. Alternatively you can also conduct your own inspection to keep track of your roof’s condition.

How to conduct your own roof check?

Here are some areas that you should keep an eye on when you are checking your roof:

The gutters

Located along the edges of the roof, gutters help to direct rainwater away from your house. It is crucial that the gutters are not blocked or clogged with leaves or other debris that could cause damage to the exterior of your house. Additionally, you should also check your downspout with a broomstick to push out any debris that is obstructing water flow from the gutter.

The flashing

Damage to a roof’s flashing can result in water leaks occurring. Typically flashings are able to endure against water for a long period of time. However, time and weather conditions might cause the metal to begin rusting. When this happens, you should immediately call a professional to have it replaced so that the roof itself does not get damaged with a water leak,

The shingles

There are so many things that can happen to your roof’s shingles – they could be peeling, missing, curling, buckled, damaged, or worn from ‘old age’. If you notice any of these on your roof, particularly shingles that are missing, then it is to enlist a professional’s help in replacing them to avoid a leak.

After you have finished inspecting your roof, check to make sure that there have been no major issues. If you are unsure or concerned about a particular finding, feel free to direct your questions to a waterproofing expert for a specialist’s opinion.
